Skin Cancer Checks
Have you noticed a change in your skin?
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with around two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.
The good news is that most skin cancers can be successfully treated when detected early. That's why regular skin checks with an experienced GP are an important part of protecting your health.
If you've noticed any of the following changes, book an appointment with a GP as soon as possible:
- A mole that has changed in size, shape or colour
- A mole or spot that has become itchy, painful or is bleeding
- A sore that doesn't heal
- A new or rapidly growing spot
- Any skin lesion that looks or feels different from others
Even if you haven't noticed any changes, annual skin checks are recommended, particularly if you spend a lot of time outdoors for work or recreation, have fair skin, or have a history of sun exposure.
Skin Cancer Services at Walton Bridge Medical Centre
Several doctors at Walton Bridge Medical Centre have experience in the early detection, diagnosis and management of skin cancer. Using modern diagnostic techniques, they can assess suspicious skin lesions and recommend the most appropriate treatment if required.
Skin cancer services include:
Full Body Skin Checks
A comprehensive skin examination using dermoscopy (a specialised magnifying device) to closely examine moles, freckles and other skin lesions. Dermoscopy helps doctors identify abnormal skin changes and determine whether further investigation is needed.
Skin Biopsies
If a suspicious lesion is identified, your doctor may recommend a biopsy to obtain a small sample of tissue for laboratory testing and diagnosis.
Skin Cancer Excisions
Where appropriate, doctors can perform surgical removal of skin cancers to help achieve complete treatment while preserving healthy surrounding tissue.
Skin Flaps and Grafts
For larger or more complex skin cancers, reconstructive procedures such as skin flaps or skin grafts may be recommended to support healing and achieve the best possible cosmetic and functional outcome.
Cryotherapy
Liquid nitrogen treatment may be suitable for certain pre-cancerous and benign skin lesions, providing a quick and effective in-clinic treatment option.
Topical Treatments
Some superficial skin cancers and sun-damaged skin may be managed with prescription topical treatments where clinically appropriate.
Please note: Procedures such as biopsies, excisions, skin grafts and flaps are usually performed at a separate appointment following your initial skin check.
Who Should Have Regular Skin Checks?
Regular skin checks are particularly important if you:
- Are aged 50 years or older
- Have a family history of melanoma
- Have previously had melanoma or other skin cancers
- Have significant sun damage
- Spend long periods outdoors
- Have a new, changing or concerning skin spot
